The President of the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) Brigitte Bushan Singh was dissatisfied with the performance of Indian wrestlers in the Olympics and called for a review meeting to be held on Tuesday. Vinesh Phogat and Bajrang Punia will be the top agenda of the discussion.

WFI Assistant Secretary Vinod Tomar told Sportskeeda:

“I am meeting with the president today. We are going to discuss the performance of the Olympics and the way forward. The result is definitely not in line with our expectations.”

Singh once claimed that Indian wrestlers will surpass the performance of the 2012 London Olympics and win more than two medals in Tokyo.

However, after only Ravi Dahiya (57 kg silver medal) and Bajrang Punia (65 kg bronze medal) were on the podium, the forecast was flat.

The agenda discussed at the review meeting of the Indian Wrestling Federation

One of the top agendas that will be discussed at the review meeting is Vinesh Phogat. The WFI chairman was dissatisfied with Vinesh, he refused to train with Indian wrestlers and wore an uncertified vest.

When she lost in the quarterfinals, the Nike vest she wore was not recognized by United World Wrestling (UWW). Officials of the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) have filed a complaint with WFI, and WFI will discuss whether any disciplinary measures are required against Vinesh.

The Federation is also dissatisfied with Bajrang. Although the national team coach Jagmander Singh advised him not to participate in the Ali Aliyev Championship in June, he still participated. Bajrang injured his knee during the game, which caused him to struggle in the Olympics.

“Wrestlers need to understand the importance of the game. They cannot do what they want, and they cannot do what they want. There is a process,” the WFI official said.

WFI will also discuss coaching contracts

In addition, contracts for foreign coaches will also be discussed. The Wrestling Federation is satisfied with the Russian coach Kamel Malikhov (the coach of Ravi Dahiya) and is likely to continue working with him. On the other hand, the contract of Deepak Punja’s coach Murad Gedarov has been terminated after the Olympic attack.

“The feedback we got is that Kamal is very good and understands Ravi, so he may get a renewal. Murad’s contract has been terminated immediately,” the WFI official added.

Vinesh’s Hungarian coach Woller Akos also found himself in the line of fire after his disastrous Olympic defeat. Vinesh competed as the top seed in the 53 kg class and was the best candidate to be on the podium. However, her outing was disappointing and she withdrew in the quarterfinals.

The future of Bajrang’s Georgian coach Shako Bentinidis will also be discussed during the WFI review meeting.
