Climate change is distorting geological time and compressing the time scale of natural processes. In photos taken around the world, Ian Van Colero These changes have been recorded and are reflected in the shrinkage of rocks, sediments and glaciers. Van Coller worked with scientists to annotate his images and point out key geological features. He also used historical photographs to show the changes, juxtaposing the black and white images taken by early expeditions with today’s landscape; the peaks that were once covered by snow are now bare rocks.

A mud core from Fairy Lake in Montana, superimposed with the surrounding mountains, reveals thousands of years of plant history. The geographer James Benes annotated the photos.
