Johns injected less than one-tenth of a teaspoon of a mixture of silk and hyaluronic acid through a special catheter connected to an endoscope. In 2014, as a postdoctoral fellow in materials engineering at Omenetto’s laboratory, Benedetto Marelli accidentally invented a way to solve food waste. “We held a cooking competition in the laboratory and we had to cook with silk,” Marelli said. Kluge stated that their goal is to make shelf-stable vaccines that are easier to deploy.
