CHILAS: Countless tourists and locals who were trapped after the Karakoram Highway was closed for three days after a landslide in Gilgit-Baltistan will be hopeful after clearing debris from the highway on Thursday night.
Nine places on the Karakoram Highway from Tatarpani to Lalpari have been cut off, including Gandlow, Lycot and other places, Assistant Commissioner Chilas said earlier.
In a statement issued on Thursday evening, local police said that the debris blocking the road was finally removed and tourists can go home.
Heavy machinery was installed on both sides of the Karakoram Mountains to clean up the highway, but due to the landslides, the repair work was difficult.

The British Home Office has stated that the opening of the blocked part of the Karakoram Highway began in the early hours of Thursday morning.
According to the British Home Office, Gilgit-Baltistan Road was also blocked in 15 places due to landslides.
They said that the Disaster Management Bureau and the Border Engineering Organization were working day and night to repair Gilgit-Astory Road, and by Thursday afternoon, all traffic on the highway had resumed.
The British Home Office had earlier stated that if there were no more rains or landslides, the roads would be reopened soon, with FWO, NHA and district officials overseeing the on-site restoration work.
Tourists were told to wait for the road to reopen in Chilas. Inter-regional highways are also open in emergency situations.
More machines were sent on Thursday to speed up the process.
At the same time, the city has continued to rain intermittently for the past three days. Houses and crops in the area were damaged, and traffic roads were severely affected.
