PM Imran calls for vaccine equity, return of ill-gotten wealth

Prime Minister Imran Khan called on Tuesday for the return of stolen wealth to developing countries as part of global economic recovery from the devastating effects of the coronavirus pandemic.
Addressing the ‘World Leaders Summit Dialogue’ organised by the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), the premier repeated his call for debt relief to Covid-hit developing countries and prioritise vaccine equity for their economic recovery.

Speaking via a video link, PM Imran expressed concerns over vaccine inequity. He also recalled his campaign for debt relief, for the developing countries. He also urged the rich states to mobilise and contribute to climate finance.

Hosted by Barbados, the dialogue was organised by UNCTAD during its ongoing 15th Quadrennial Meeting. The theme of the dialogue was ‘Building a more prosperous development path: Matching the scale of the moment’.
Reiterating his deep concern over the huge challenge of illicit flow of money amounting to $1 trillion annually from developing countries to richer capitals and tax havens, the prime minister underscored the imperative of halting these outflows.

He also emphasised the need for implementation of the UN FACTI Panel’s recommendations, enabling the developing countries to more meaningfully alleviate poverty and human development.
Low-cost housing
Separately, Prime Minister Imran Khan said on Tuesday that completion of low-cost housing projects is among the priorities of the current government and that it was taking steps for the provision of loans to the needy.
Talking to Naya Pakistan Housing Authority Chairman Lt-Gen (retd) Anwar Ali Haider, Premier Imran directed for the completion of the ongoing projects on time. During the meeting, the prime minister was informed that loans facilities through the banks would be ensured.
Separately, Minister for Defence Pervez Khattak also called on the prime minister. They discussed the political situation in the country.
