According to Interfax news agency, Russia filed an administrative lawsuit against Facebook’s WhatsApp on Friday, claiming that it failed to localize the data of Russian users in Russia.
Facebook did not immediately comment.
A day ago, a Russian court imposed a fine of 3 million rubles on Alphabet’s Google violation of personal data legislation and filed administrative lawsuits against Facebook and Twitter for the same crime.
These cases are part of a wider quarrel between Russia and large technology companies, and Moscow often fines social media giants for failing to delete banned content and trying to force foreign technology companies to open offices in Russia.
Interfax news agency quoted court documents that WhatsApp may be fined 1 million to 6 million rubles (13,700 to 82,250 US dollars). The court date has not yet been determined.
