What is a hyperbaric chamber? How does it help MMA fighters avoid sustained damage?

Must Read

A hyperbaric chamber is a pressurized chamber in which MMA fighters and other athletes inhale 100% oxygen. This therapy is called hyperbaric oxygen therapy or HBOT.

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is a treatment used to accelerate the healing of stubborn wounds and other diseases (such as carbon monoxide poisoning, gangrene, and tissue hypoxia infections).

The hyperbaric chamber allows the body to get the oxygen it needs to produce the ATP needed for energy and to expel lactic acid that causes muscle fatigue.

Elevated oxygen levels help athletes improve athletic performance and recover quickly after exercise. It also replicates altitude training.

Check out UFC featherweight Mike Grundy using the hyperbaric chamber:

Hyperbaric chambers are no longer just for treatment. In fact, even during training, many MMA fighters use it as a routine procedure to recover from combat trauma.

Including TJ Dillashaw, Urijah Faber, Cain Velasquez And we have seen more people use new technology to recover from post-war injuries and improve performance.

This is the recovery of former WEC lightweight champion and former UFC fighter Urijah Faber using the hyperbaric chamber:

In hyperbaric therapy, since the gas is pure oxygen, the liquid is your own blood. Breathing oxygen in a high-pressure environment increases the blood’s ability to carry oxygen and improves blood flow to muscles and organs.

Is the hyperbaric chamber really useful?

HBO therapy has clear and well-documented benefits in the treatment of decompression sickness (commonly referred to as “bend”, a common diving-related injury) and severe burns and wound infections. But how does it help fighters?

Researchers conducted a study A few years ago, in a group of 11 Jiu-Jitsu players, it was discovered that the use of HBO therapy and hyperbaric chambers did benefit the subjects because they could improve the body’s ability to absorb oxygen and recover better.

In an episode of UFC 177 Embedded, you can see former bantamweight champion TJ Dillashaw using HBO therapy. In 2014, when Dillashaw defeated Jose Soto in TKO, the video appeared before the event.
