Islamabad: Federal Minister of Education and Professional Training Shafqat Mehmood said on Sunday that the current curriculum is based on injustice, and therefore, the introduction of a unified curriculum will be a step towards ending injustice and division.

At a press conference in Islamabad on Sunday, the minister announced that a unified curriculum for classes 1 to 5 will be implemented tomorrow.

The course will be taught in all private and public educational institutions.

Mehmood stated that this is the first time in Pakistan’s history that a unified curriculum has been introduced.

He explained that in some educational institutions, some people benefit from special courses, while most students studying in Islamic schools and government schools have difficulty advancing.

Mehmood added that the education system divides society according to different educational settings, which in turn creates a completely different reality for the students who study under them.

He clarified that the necessity of a unified curriculum is not to instill the same ideas, but to create a sense of nationalism among students.

“Most countries in the world, including the United Kingdom, Japan and China, have national curricula,” he said. “The lack of a unified curriculum will cause injustice and division.”

He added that a separate national curriculum will not end injustice and division, but it is a step towards this goal.

Mehmood announced that PM Imran Khan will officially launch the national curriculum tomorrow, adding that private publishers will be allowed to publish and distribute books based on the core curriculum.

The minister added that schools will be allowed to teach content other than the core curriculum, but the content of the core curriculum will not be affected.

Mehmood further stated that the Ministry of Education is currently considering the introduction of exams for grades 5 and 8 to check which schools follow the curriculum, and that a unified curriculum will be introduced for grades 6 to 8 next year.
