The Philippines ordered an evacuation because the Taal Volcano alert level was raised | Philippine News

The Thar alert was raised from level 2 to level 3, which means that the “magma intrusion” of the main crater “may further promote subsequent eruptions.”

After the Philippine authorities raised the alert on Thursday, they began to evacuate thousands of people. The volcano spewed gas and steam one kilometer (0.62 miles) high.

The alert on Taal Volcano, located about 70 kilometers (45 miles) south of downtown Manila, rose from level 2 to level 3 within a range of level 5. The Seismology and Volcanology Institute said this meant “magma intrusion” from the main crater. “May further promote subsequent eruptions.”

Taal Volcano is one of the smallest active volcanoes in the world. Although it is only 311 meters (1,020 feet) above sea level, it can be fatal. An eruption in 1911 killed more than 1,300 people.

In January last year, Tal sprayed 15 kilometers (9.3 miles) of volcanic ash and steam pillars into the sky, forcing more than 100,000 people to leave their homes, causing extensive flight cancellations in Manila and a large amount of volcanic ash falling.

The authorities warned that the current volcanic eruption may be more dangerous than last year.

A video posted on the Seismological Bureau’s Facebook page showed that the water in the Taal crater boiled before and after the eruption.

The magma comes into contact with the water in the crater and then turns into gas and steam. This is called a magma eruption.

Maria Antonia Bonas, head of the agency’s monitoring and eruption prediction department, said at a press conference: “Magma is more dangerous because it has interacted with magma.”

Expected to erupt

The Philippine Earthquake Administration warned of possible “continuous eruptions” and recommended evacuation from the volcanic islands on the lake surrounding Taal Volcano and the “high-risk” areas of Agungsilo and Laurel towns.

Renato Solidum, the head of the agency, told AFP: “We are just raising the alert because something is happening, which may lead to an increase in activity.”

A spokesperson for the National Disaster Agency said that its local agent had called government officials and emergency services to hold an emergency meeting. He estimated that nearly 15,000 people live in the most vulnerable areas.

Agoncillo disaster officer Junfrance De Villa told AFP that preparations are underway to prevent residents from needing to evacuate from the lakeside community.

“Some people have taken refuge in relatives,” De Vera said.

The National Disaster Agency warned of earthquakes related to volcanic eruptions.

The governor of Batangas Province, Hermilando Mandanas, stated that the evacuation of Agoncillo began in the late afternoon and 3,523 families (ie 14,495 people) were moved to safe areas.

He added that dump trucks were sent to assist and the payload and evacuation center were being prepared.
