A statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Wednesday said that after successfully bringing back 65 Pakistani prisoners from Saudi Arabia before Eid al-Adha, the government announced that it is working to bring another 23 prisoners back to the country.

“According to Prime Minister Imran Khan’s instructions, the Pakistani Embassy in Riyadh has been in contact with the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to coordinate the early release and repatriation of Pakistani nationals serving sentences abroad for misdemeanors,” the statement read.

At the request of Pakistan, a high-level committee of the Saudi authorities conducted a detailed review of Pakistanis detained in Riyadh and exempted 85 people from prison terms.

After being released, the Pakistani Embassy in Riyadh liaised closely with the relevant Saudi authorities to obtain exit visas for these released persons.

“In accordance with the Prime Minister’s instructions, we have so far repatriated 62 of the 85 people so that they can celebrate Eid al-Fitr with their families in Pakistan. The remaining 23 people will be repatriated as soon as their exit visa procedures are completed,” The statement said.

The Pakistani Embassy in Riyadh is also coordinating similar repatriations from other parts of Saudi Arabia.

The statement concluded: “We thank King Salman bin Abdul Aziz and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman for providing convenience to Pakistanis working in Saudi Arabia.”

One day ago, Prime Minister Imran Khan announced the successful repatriation of 65 prisoners from Saudi Arabia.

The Prime Minister said on Twitter: “According to my instructions, the funds have been arranged. Today, a special plane brought 62 prisoners back from Saudi Arabia so that they can spend Eid al-Fitr with their families.”

“Helping Pakistanis in foreign prisons and assisting them to return to Pakistan is our government’s commitment to our people,” Imran Khan said.

The Minister of Information and Broadcasting, Fawad Chowdhury, praised the prime minister, saying that no other government has shown sympathy for overseas Pakistanis like Prime Minister Imran Khan.

“The joy of [these] The family is due to the efforts of the Prime Minister. Thousands of Pakistanis who faced problems abroad have been brought back,” he said.

In May of this year, Prime Minister Imran Khan and Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz held a delegation-level meeting to discuss bilateral relations and ways to further strengthen cooperation.

During the meeting, the two countries also signed a number of agreements to strengthen bilateral cooperation in the fields of energy, media, and prisoner exchange.

In addition to another crime-fighting agreement, the two countries also signed an agreement to exchange convicted prisoners.
