New Delhi: T-Mobile America said on Wednesday that an investigation into a data breach revealed that more than 40 million personal data from previous and potential customers, including social security numbers and driver’s license information, were stolen. The stolen files also included data from 7.8 million existing T-Mobile wireless customers.

The telecommunications service provider said the date of birth, first name and last name were also stolen, adding that there was no indication that their financial details were compromised.

As of June, the company had 104.8 million customers and admitted to a data breach on Sunday after the US digital media agency Vice reported for the first time that a seller posted some private data on an underground forum, including a social security number from a company. Vice stated that the seller claimed that the data of 100 million people had been leaked during the breach. The seller provided data on 30 million people at the price of 6 bitcoins (approximately US$270,000).

Later reports indicated that the asking price had fallen, and the entire data was sold for only $200.
