Sudan wants the UN Security Council to discuss Ethiopia’s Nile dam | Egypt News

Sudan and Egypt hope that the international community will intervene before Ethiopia plans to impound the second dam this summer.

Sudan has asked the United Nations Security Council to meet to discuss a dispute over Ethiopia’s construction of a giant dam on the Blue Nile.

Ethiopia has pinned its hopes for economic development and power generation on the Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD), while the two downstream countries—Egypt and Sudan—are concerned about this and seek to reach a binding agreement on the water injection and operation of the dam. Agreement.

Egypt relies on the Nile for 90% of its fresh water and regards the dam as an existential threat.

Sudan is concerned about the operation of its own Nile dam and water supply station.

On Tuesday, Sudan’s Foreign Minister Mariam Sadik Mahdi called on the Security Council to meet as soon as possible to discuss GERD and its “impact on the safety and security of millions of people,” the government statement said.

The statement added that in a letter, Mahdi called on the President of the Security Council to urge Ethiopia to stop “unilaterally” filling the dam, “this will exacerbate disputes and pose a threat to regional and international peace and security.”

Ethiopian officials have not yet commented on the letter.

Earlier this month, after negotiations initiated by the African Union reached a deadlock, Sudan and Egypt agreed to work together at all levels to push Ethiopia to “seriously” negotiate an agreement.

The two countries call on the international community to intervene.

Arab countries call on the Security Council to discuss this dispute and Ethiopia plans to carry out a second dam storage this summer, even if there is no agreement with Sudan and Egypt.

Ethiopia completely rejected the Arab League’s resolution.

The Arab League’s special envoy to the United Nations, Majid Abdul Fatah, said on Tuesday night that if Ethiopia cannot reach an agreement, Sudan and Egypt are submitting a draft resolution on GERD to the Security Council.

Fattah told the Egyptian television channel Sada Elbalad that Arab countries will lobby for the draft resolution, adding that he does not want the world’s powers to stop it.

Ethiopia has previously rejected calls from Egypt and Sudan for mediators outside the African Union to participate.

Sudan stated in early June that it was willing to reach a partial interim agreement on a multi-billion-dollar dam, but with specific conditions.
