Islamabad: Sialkot International Airport has become Pakistan’s first airport with rapid polymerase chain reaction (PCR) testing facilities. Arab news Reported on Tuesday.

According to the report, this step was taken after the United Arab Emirates (UAE) mandated that individuals flying to Dubai from Pakistan and some other South Asian countries undergo PCR testing.

The publication stated that the UAE lifted restrictions on travelers from Pakistan, India, Nigeria and other countries on August 5.

The National Emergency and Crisis Management Authority (NCEMA) stated that passengers from these destinations can transit at UAE airports as long as they test negative for rapid PCR 72 hours before departure.

The Pakistan Civil Aviation Authority (PCAA) has sent a letter to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs regarding the lack of such facilities at the airport and asked it to communicate with the UAE authorities to reconsider the situation.

It said in a letter to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs that at present the airport only provides rapid antigen testing.

However, Nisar Ahmed, an official at Sialkot International Airport, told Arab news The airport authority has now arranged a rapid PCR test facility at the airport with the help of the city laboratory and research center.

The facility has been in operation since Monday night; however, passengers must pay to use it, he said.

He further stated that after the facility completed testing, a total of 122 passengers went to Dubai.

PCAA spokesperson Saad bin Ayub said that the purpose of the authorities is to persuade the UAE government to accept rapid antigen testing instead of rapid PCR testing, and for this to require the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to use diplomatic contacts.

But he said that the ministry told the PCAA that the UAE government insisted on rapid PCR testing.

Ayyub’s statement was confirmed by the UAE Embassy in Islamabad, which stated: “Yes, all nationalities and destinations must undergo rapid PCR.”
