Islamabad: Shahbaz Sharif, the opposition leader of the National Assembly, asked all political parties to participate in electoral reforms on Friday.
The former Chief Minister of Punjab wrote two letters to the Speaker of the National Assembly Assad Kaiser and Chief Election Commissioner Sikander Sultan.
Sharif said in a letter to the Chief Election Commissioner that electoral reform is essential to ensure that the next election is held transparently and without any interference.
He accused the government of trying to make the next election controversial by introducing unilateral election reforms.
Shahbaz claimed that the government’s electoral reforms were not constitutional, and added that relevant stakeholders have not yet participated.
Sharif cited the ECP example, saying that the committee also expressed concerns about the recent election bill. He said that the government has overturned the election bill through Parliament.
The PML-N leader said that in order to carry out meaningful election reforms, relevant agencies not only need to put forward their own views, but are also willing to take responsibility to ensure the transparency of voting.
He stated that the Election Commission has the responsibility to ensure that it listens to the suggestions made by all parties on election reform, and urges the Central Election Commission to invite all parties to conduct consultations in order to finalize a consensus-supported plan. He added that the plan could then be submitted to Parliament for approval.
Media can enter parliament completely
Sharif said in another letter to members of Congress that after the decline in coronavirus cases, the parliament had resumed activities, adding that the media should be allowed to cover the proceedings of the House of Representatives.
He called on the government to ensure that all obstacles and obstacles are eliminated so that the media can independently report on the proceedings of the National Assembly and the Senate.
The PML-N president also requested that opposition leaders be allowed to speak to the media. He said in the letter that the media did not have the opportunity to provide equal coverage to the government and opposition parties.
