Karachi: Mehmood Moulvi, Special Assistant to the Prime Minister for Maritime Affairs, revealed on Monday that the cargo ship trapped in Clifton Beach in Karachi will not be able to move until August 15.

Mulvey said at a press conference held with Federal Minister of Maritime Affairs Ali Zaidi that the authorities must first suck oil from the ship so that it can be moved.

In response to a question, SAPM stated that the port has been closed during Eid, so work was suspended, adding that when the rescue team first arrived near the ship to help it move, water had already entered the ship.

He further stated that the ship’s engine was weak and could not work properly.

On the other hand, the captain of the cargo ship refuted the statement issued by Federal Minister Ali Zaidi, claiming that he had called an emergency call, but the authorities did not provide them with a berth.

He said that the second anchor was also disengaged from the ship at 1:15 a.m. on the night of July 20-21, and he added that he called SOS at 1:20 a.m.

He said that the authorities in Mohammed bin Qasim and Manola ports also heard emergency calls, but the Karachi Port Trust (KPT) control room did not provide them with any help. The captain said he was told that the people involved were attending an important meeting.

He said that all communication data was saved with them.

At the same time, shipping sources said that because the tug was waiting for permission, it was unable to start rescue operations to tow the ship into the sea.

Sources worry that if the tugboat does not get permission, the ship may sink further into the sand. KPT sources said that the ship’s owner has filed an insurance claim.

According to sources, insurance claims may be worth millions of dollars.

“MV Heng Tong is contacting the control of Muhammad Bin Qasim port on Channel 16,” the captain sent the message three times.

At the same time, the authorities instructed the captain to contact Channel 10. The captain contacted Channel 10 and received no response.

A few minutes later, the captain decided to seek help from the Karachi Manola control center and said: “Our ship is heading to the shore and may be stranded.”

The captain asked again: “Did you hear from me?”

“I’m sorry, we can’t help you,” the control tower replied based on the recording.
