Islamabad: Foreign Minister Shah Mahmoud Qureshi said on Wednesday that the key to unlocking the geo-economic potential of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) region lies in strengthening interconnection among member countries, and proposed a transition to their own currencies and the establishment of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization for development. Funds and banks are committed to project financing.

According to a statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs at the meeting of the Council of Foreign Ministers of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), the Foreign Minister stated that “The collective vision of the SCO will be achieved through effective cooperation between the SCO in connectivity and development. Transport links by air, road and sea”.

“However, we have noticed the lack of progress in road construction and transportation interconnection initiatives. In advancing these proposals, we all need to go beyond the zero-sum concept and choose cooperation rather than confrontation,” Qureshi said.

He said that the Shanghai Cooperation Organization is an important platform for establishing closer ties with regional partners and realizing the emerging potential of integration between the “Belt and Road” initiative and the Eurasian Economic Union.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs stated that the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) is the flagship project of the “Belt and Road” initiative and complements the Shanghai Cooperation Organization’s vision of regional connectivity and economic integration.

Qureshi said that Pakistan sees the Shanghai Cooperation Organization as a unique template for relations between countries in the Eurasian heartland. The center brings together nearly 44% of the world’s population, a quarter of the world’s GDP, and a fifth of the total Eurasian territory. three.

He said that during the COVID-19 period, the member states of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization “came forward to meet the challenge” and particularly praised the role of China and Russia in the collective crisis.

The Foreign Minister said that in order to overcome the challenges posed by the pandemic, Pakistan supports initiatives such as e-commerce, digital economy, and sharing of innovation and new technology experience and practices.

In terms of regional security, he stated that the mechanism led by the Shanghai Cooperation Organization “has achieved great success in responding to common challenges such as terrorism, separatism, extremism, illegal drug trafficking, and transnational organized crime.”

He said that Pakistan is making contributions by participating in joint border exercises and joint counter-terrorism exercises, as well as collective actions in combating drugs and their precursors.

Peace in Afghanistan is vital to SCO space security

He said that stability and peace in Afghanistan “are related to the regional security of the SCO space.”

He said that as a shared responsibility, Pakistan has played a role in promoting the peace process, aiming to establish a comprehensive, broad-based and inclusive negotiated political solution led and owned by Afghanistan.

He expressed serious concern about the situation that is taking place after the withdrawal of US and NATO troops and the failure to reach a peace agreement.

“The increase in violence in recent weeks has exacerbated an already turbulent situation.

He said: “The ghost of chaos and the escalating conflict are imminent, which will also provide space for’destroyers’ who want to see the unstable rule of Afghanistan and the region.”

He called on all parties in Afghanistan to participate constructively and work hard to reach a political settlement through negotiations.

“Pakistan has been and will always be a partner for peace.

He said: “We are ready to cooperate with the member states of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization to strengthen our efforts for sustainable peace and stability in Afghanistan.”

The idea of ​​a prosperous, interconnected region

The Minister of Foreign Affairs put forward some ideas, which he said “will help realize our common vision for a prosperous and interconnected region”.
