'Queen Elizabeth source of strength for people', PM writes to British counterpart

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has said that Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II devoted her life to selfless public service and her dignified demeanour and calming presence was a source of strength for the people of the United Kingdom.

The Britain's longest-reigning monarch and the nation's figurehead for seven decades, had died aged 96 on Thursday.

He wrote this in a letter to his British counterpart Prime Minister Elizabeth Truss on Friday. The prime minister expressed his condolences on the passing of the longest-reigning monarch of Britain on behalf of the government and the people of Pakistan.

Paying rich tributes to the late Queen, he said she “presided over transformational changes across the United Kingdom and the world”, adding that the Queen demonstrated abiding commitment to the Commonwealth and helped shape it into a “robust family of free nations we cherish so dearly today”.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif penned a letter to newly-elected UK Prime Minister Liz Truss, expressing solidarity with the UK as they mourn the loss of Queen Elizabeth II.

The premier noted in his letter that the people of Pakistan held the late Queen in the highest esteem as the head of state of the United Kingdom as well as the head of the Commonwealth family.

Recalling her visits to Pakistan, Prime Minister Shehbaz said that the bond between the people of Pakistan and the Queen deepened over time. “In this difficult time, our thoughts and prayers remain with you, the people of the United Kingdom and the Royal Family,” the prime minister said.

Soon after the news of the Queen’s death was announced, the prime minister tweeted his condolences and said, “Pakistan joins the Commonwealth nations in mourning her death”.

He also visited the British High Commission in Islamabad to offer his condolences and paid homage to the Queen's leadership and public service.
