Prime Minister Imran Khan on Sunday called the newly-elected President of Iran Seyed Ebrahim Raisi and congratulated him on winning the Iranian presidential elections.

According to a statement issued by the Prime Minister’s Office, during the call, the leaders of the two countries expressed satisfaction with the upward trajectory of bilateral relations between Pakistan and Iran and agreed to further strengthen existing cooperation, with particular emphasis on the economic aspect, the statement said.

The talks affirmed that the establishment of a border material market on the border between Pakistan and Iraq is an important step that will bring economic and social benefits to the people of the two countries.

On the regional front, Khan expressed concern about the deterioration of the security situation in Afghanistan and warned that the latest developments may have a serious impact on both Pakistan and Iran, leading to the influx of refugees into the border areas of the two countries.

According to the statement, Prime Minister Khan strongly emphasized the necessity of a negotiated political settlement of the conflict in Afghanistan. Both sides emphasized the need to continue to promote an Afghan-led and Afghan-owned inclusive political settlement.

The Prime Minister also thanked Iran for its firm support for the just cause of Jammu and Kashmir. The two leaders expressed concern about the serious human rights situation in IIOJK and Palestine, and emphasized the need to resolve these long-standing disputes in accordance with UN Security Council resolutions.

The two sides agreed to maintain high-level exchanges, and the leaders of both sides invited each other for official visits.
