The attack on the Federal Government College in Kebbi State was the third gang attack on a school in Nigeria in a month.

According to the police, armed assailants killed a police officer at a school in Kebbi State in northwestern Nigeria and kidnapped five teachers and an unknown number of students.

The attack on Thursday occurred at the Federal Government College in Birnin Yauri, a remote town in Kebbi State. This was the third attack by an armed group on a school or university in Nigeria in less than a month, and the authorities blamed it on bandits seeking ransom.

Kebbi State Police spokesperson Nafiu Abubakar said that a police officer was shot dead when the police exchanged fire with the attacker, and a student was also shot dead and was being treated.

“We are still working to determine the number of students kidnapped, but five teachers have been kidnapped,” Abubakar said.

Abubakar said that security forces are searching for kidnapped students and teachers in the nearby forest.

Atiku Aboki, a local resident who went to the school shortly after the gunfire stopped, told Reuters that he saw panic and chaos when people were looking for their children.

“When we got there, we saw students crying, teachers crying, and everyone sympathized with people,” he said on the phone.

“Everyone is at a loss. Then my brother called me [to say] His two children were not seen [we] I don’t know if they were kidnapped. “

Heavily armed criminal groups, known locally as bandits, have long targeted the central and northwestern states, attacking villages, stealing cattle, and kidnapping for extortion.

But they are increasingly targeting schools, robbing students or schoolchildren and rushing them to forest hideouts in order to negotiate the payment of the ransom.

Since December last year, more than 700 children and students have been kidnapped by these gangs for ransom.

The attack mainly occurred in the northwestern region. They are different from armed operations centered in the northeast. Boko Haram kidnapped more than 270 female students from Chibok in 2014, making global headlines.

At the end of May, armed men captured 136 children from an Islamic seminary in Niger State in central Nigeria.

The mass kidnapping incident is just one challenge facing President Mohammadu Buhari’s security forces, who are also battling armed conflicts in the northeast and increasing separatist tensions in the southeast of the country.
