PM Imran says provision of justice govt’s top priority

Prime Minister Imran Khan on Tuesday said the provision of justice was the government’s top priority as he performed the groundbreaking of the new building for district courts in Islamabad, which will house 93 courtrooms.
The building is being constructed on the directives of the premier by the Capital Development Authority (CDA) and Frontier Works Organisation (FWO) and will be completed in six months, Radio Pakistan reported.

The state broadcaster further said that the CDA will use the ‘latest technology’ to complete the project on time. The district courts will also have separate arrangements for the facilitation of lawyers and litigants.
Addressing the ceremony, the prime minister said the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) government will take all possible measures to facilitate the judiciary as the provision of justice to every Pakistani is its top priority.
The prime minister said along with education and health, justice plays an important role in human development because it establishes the rule of law that protects the weak from the powerful.
Speaking about the 1960s, the premier said Pakistan was progressing during the decade and its development model was being followed by other countries in Asia.
"Pakistan was at number four in terms of development in Asia," he said, adding that the country had top-class hospitals and universities. However, the country started to lag behind and the states that followed its development model surpassed it.
India and Bangladesh, the two South Asian states, also surpassed Pakistan in development, he said, adding that these countries progressed because of the rule of law.
According to the premier, he joined politics because "people like him" needed to struggle to save Pakistan. He said the rule of law is important for foreign investment because people will only invest when they will have confidence in the justice system.
Imran added that in past, the government failed to ensure swift justice to people because powerful segments of the society do not want to be held accountable. He added that a society that manages to implement the rule of law becomes civilised and prosperous.

Speaking about the lawyers’ movement, the PM said he joined the "epic struggle" because it stood up to a military dictator for the cause of an "independent judiciary".
"It was an epic and democratic struggle for the rule of law," he said, adding that he was disappointed because the lawyers’ movement took a different turn and failed to bear fruit. He, however, added that the struggle for rule of law in a society is ever-present.
During the address, the prime minister also praised the CDA and FWO, saying due to their efforts, the cost of the project was brought down from Rs6.5 billion to Rs1.5 billion. He said he hoped that the two organisations would be able to finish the project in the stipulated time frame of six months.
