Imran Khan reiterated his country’s support for the Chinese government’s policy in the Muslim-majority Xinjiang province.

Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan reiterated Pakistan’s support for the Chinese government’s policy in the Muslim-majority Xinjiang province, and also praised the country’s one-party system for providing society with a better model than electoral democracy.

On Thursday, as part of the celebration of the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Communist Party of China, Khan was talking to members of the Chinese news media visiting Islamabad.

Human rights groups accuse China of systematic and extensive “mass detention and torture, which are equivalent to crimes against humanity” for the Muslim population in its southwestern Xinjiang province.

In a report last month, Amnesty International referred to the situation in Xinjiang as a “dystopian hellscape” and cited statements from dozens of eyewitnesses that detailed brainwashing, torture, and obliteration of cultural identities Allegations.

But Khan, who often calls for international action against Islamophobia, said he is satisfied with the Chinese government’s denial of any human rights violations.

“In our interactions with Chinese officials, what happened in Xinjiang was completely different from what we heard from Western media and Western governments,” he said on Thursday.

“Because we have a very strong relationship with China and our relationship is based on trust, we actually accepted the Chinese version. We accept their comments on the Xinjiang project.”

Pakistan has a long-term strategic relationship with its northeast neighbor, China. China has invested more than 60 billion U.S. dollars in the country through the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) project.

Khan also praised China’s one-party governance, the country is completely controlled by the Communist Party of China, and there are no direct elections for major positions or the national parliament.

“The Chinese Communist Party is a unique model. So far, we have been told that the best way for society to improve itself is the Western democratic system,” Khan said.

“What the Chinese Communist Party did is it brought this alternative model. In fact, their way of nurturing value in society has defeated all Western democracies.”

Khan, who was elected to power in a general election in 2018, said electoral democracy “straight-jackets you” when it comes to reforms, and lauded the “flexibility” of the Chinese model.

“Until now, people’s perception is that electoral democracy is the best way to gain leadership based on performance and then hold the leadership to take responsibility. But what the Chinese Communist Party has done is that there is no such electoral democracy, it actually achieved better Achievements,” he said.
