Federal Energy Minister Hamad Azhar announced on Wednesday that Pakistan has achieved the “highest power supply and demand” in history.
“The highest power demand and supply in Pakistan’s history reached 24,284 megawatts (MW) today,” the minister wrote on Twitter. He added that this growth not only reflects higher demand and power generation, but also an increase in transmission capacity.
“In contrast, the highest generation and transmission achieved before the PTI government was in July 2018, reaching 20,811 MW,” Azhar said.
The minister also shared that although the country’s largest Tabella Dam “only produced 25% of its output in the peak season this year”, it still achieved a “record”.
There were reports last month that Pakistan’s power crisis had become worse, with power outages in different cities for several hours.
Data shared by sources in the power sector at the time showed that the country was facing a power shortage of 7,000 to 8,000 megawatts.
Due to a mudslide at the Tabela Dam, power generation has stopped and machinery may be damaged.
They have stated that the power generation from the Tabela Dam will take time to restart and operate.
