Outsourcing of solid waste management in two districts was approved

The Sindh Solid Waste Management Committee (SSWMB) has approved the procurement process for the outsourcing of solid waste business in Kolange and the Central Region.

The board of directors also approved the existing contract of the Mariel District Municipal Corporation to carry out municipal solid waste management activities (DMC) in the Gulshan-e-Hadeed, Murad Memon Goth and Steel Town areas under the jurisdiction of the Karachi District Council.

The board of directors made these decisions at the 15th meeting of the Karachi Competitive Livable Cities (CLICK) Project Office, which cost US$240 million.

The meeting discussed the operation and administration of SSWMB and made important decisions. The meeting also approved the Board’s budget of Rs 8 billion for the 2021-22 fiscal year.

They also passed a resolution to transfer and allocate 500 acres of land in Jam Chakro in the name of SSWMB, 450 acres in Gond Pass in the western region, 200 acres in SonWalhar on the M-9 highway in Jamshoro, and 500 acres in Ganjo Takar on the sea. The board of directors verified the finalization of the procurement process of Hyderabad’s mid-end business, as well as the procurement process of outsourcing solid waste business in Kolange District to a Chinese company and outsourcing the Central District to a European-backed company.

They also approved the procurement process for outsourcing front-end collection contracts in Hyderabad and Lakana. In addition, the board of directors recognized that charging households in seven districts in Karachi with a minimum fee for solid waste management services can bring income potential of 6.5 billion rupees. Initially, the income potential was estimated at 2.8 billion rupees per year.

The managing director of SSWMB was appointed to complete detailed proposals in this regard. The Board of Directors approved the implementation of municipal solid waste management activities in the Gulshan-e-Hadeed, Steel Town and Murad Memon Goth areas under the jurisdiction of the District Council in accordance with the existing contract of Malir DMC.

The board of directors has made this decision based on the request of the Malir District Administration to expand the health services of Murad Memon Goth, Gulshan-e-Hadeed and Steel Town, otherwise these areas will form part of the Karachi District Council restrictions.

The board of directors was informed that, at the request of the regional government, a company carrying out waste management business in Malir DMC conducted a survey and reported that Gulshan-e-Hadeed has an estimated population of 217,856 and a household size of 6,360, and their estimated amount of waste generated It is 110 tons per day.

Memon Goth has an estimated population of 75,000, and an estimated 38 tons of garbage is generated every day, while the steel city with an estimated population of 25,000 generates 20 tons of garbage every day. In the best interest of the public and to minimize environmental hazards, the board of directors approved the proposal.

The meeting was presided over by Nasir Shah, Minister of Local Government of Sindh Province. LG Secretary, Special Finance Secretary, SSWMB Secretary, Operation-I and Operation-II Executive Directors, Karachi’s additional commissioners and others attended the meeting.
