There will be spectators for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games this summer. The maximum number of spectators is 50% of the venue capacity and the maximum capacity is 10,000.

The decision was announced after an online meeting between the “five parties” and local organizers, the International Olympic Committee, the International Paralympic Committee, the Japanese government and the Tokyo Metropolitan Government.

If there are rapid changes in the number of infected people and the capacity of the Japanese health care system, the numbers will be reviewed.

Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga, who is in favor of allowing fans, said before the official announcement that he will ban fans if the situation changes.

Yoshihide Suga said: “If it is necessary to enter a state of emergency, I will flexibly open it to any fans in order to realize that the safety and security of the people will be put first in the game.”

“In an emergency situation, it is very possible…for safety and security (the game), I will not hesitate to have no fans.”

Audience criteria include wearing a mask at all times, not shouting or speaking loudly, and going home immediately after the event.

Last week, the Japanese government’s senior adviser on coronavirus issues suggested that the Olympics be held behind closed doors.

However, the organizers stated that they are looking for ways to allow a limited number of Japanese audiences to participate.

The postponed Tokyo Olympics was originally scheduled to be held from July 23 to August 8.

Tokyo 2020 Chairman Seiko Hashimoto said on Friday: “From [adviser] Dr. Omi said that ideally, the best way is to host the Olympics without spectators-this is his suggestion.

“But if we want to host the Olympic Games with the audience, in this case, he also has his own suggestions.”

“When we looked at other sports events such as J.League and professional baseball, they provided us with enough evidence of what they have been able to achieve so far in this situation.

“So we also need to consider these things. The Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics are very special.”

Currently, other Japanese sports events can also accommodate 10,000 spectators or 50% of the venue capacity, whichever is the lowest.

In April, it was decided to ban overseas audiences from entering Japan.

According to reports, so far only about 16% of the country’s population has received a single dose of the vaccine.
