Karachi: Mufti Taqi Usmani seems likely to have escaped the assassination after a man was arrested on suspicion of stalking clergy on Thursday.

As a famous religious scholar in Pakistan, Usmani was walking outside Dar ul Uloom Korangi when a suspicious man was spotted by his guards and followed him.

According to a source from Dar ul Uloom, the scholar’s guard captured the suspect before he approached Usmani-he has been identified as a 35-year-old man named Asim Laeeq-and found him holding a knife .

SSP Korangi Shahjahan stated that the suspect did not attack Usmani. He said the suspect requested a meeting with the scholar after Fajar prayed.

“The unidentified suspect has been detained and we are continuing to investigate the incident further,” SSP said.

SSP said that when asked, the suspect revealed that he was tired of arguing with his wife and tried to approach Usmani to seek his prayers on the matter.

He added that the suspect was a resident of the Gulistan-e-Jauhar area.

Usmani confirmed that he was still safe after being assassinated

Soon after the incident, Usmani released an audio message confirming most of the details of the incident and assuring his followers that he was safe.

“After morning prayer, a suspect came to me and asked to talk to me privately,” he said. “When the suspect pulled a knife from his pocket, I just got up to talk to him,” the scholar revealed.

Usmani said his “followers” caught the suspect before he was injured, thanking God for his safety.

“The authorities are investigating this matter,” he said. “After the investigation is over, the situation will become clearer,” he added.
