Washington: Emphasizing the need to resolve the conflict in Afghanistan through political negotiations, National Security Advisor Dr. Moeed Yusuf clarified that Pakistan will not accept a “forced takeover” of Kabul.
After concluding a week-long meeting with the U.S. government, Muyid Youssef said at a press conference at the Pakistani Embassy in Washington, D.C. on Wednesday evening: “We will not accept a forced takeover.”
“We have made it clear that we are aligned with the progress of the international community on this matter. But the world also needs to be clear that the United States is investing in political solutions.”
He added that the harsh words of the Afghan government towards Pakistan have prevented good relations between neighboring countries.
He further said: “We are beginning to see the Afghan government very consciously and deliberately using Pakistan as a scapegoat.”
Moyd said that the current Afghan government hopes to “delegate all responsibility for its failure” to Pakistan.
He urged the Afghan government and the Taliban to “compromise and reach a peaceful solution” because the combatants made rapid progress during the U.S. withdrawal.
“Given the actual situation, some compromises must be made. But the violence must stop,” he added.
He refuted the claim that Islamabad exerted influence on the Taliban.
“No matter what limited influence we have, we will use it,” he said, noting that Pakistan encourages the Taliban to negotiate with the Afghan government in Doha.
“Now with the U.S. withdrawal, this leverage is further declining logically,” he added.
