On July 12, the young Pakistani education activist Malala Yousafzai turned 24.
Yousafzai was born in Mingora, Pakistan in 1997. Since the Taliban banned girls from going to school in Swat in 2008, she has been speaking out for girls’ education.
The activist took Instagram to celebrate her birthday with her supporters.
“242, 42, or 24 years old… age is just a number,” the headline reads.
Malala was attacked by the Taliban in 2012, and Malala rose to fame because she disregarded the ban and launched a campaign for girls’ education in her village. The girl was shot in the face and was rushed to the hospital. The Pakistani government later sent her to the UK for further treatment.
After the attack, Malala has been living in the UK. She received an undergraduate degree from Oxford University last year.
The teenager has attracted the attention of the global media. Since her near death, she has been interviewed many times in newspapers and TV shows. She is also the co-founder of her non-profit organization Malala Fund.

Nine months after being shot, Malala gave a historic speech at the United Nations Headquarters in New York.
The Nobel Prize winner emphasized the need for women’s education on a global scale. She also called on world leaders to reform policies and provide free and compulsory education for all children.
Yousufzai’s powerful and touching words won several standing ovations.
Since the speech was delivered on her birthday, the United Nations announced that from now on, July 12 will be designated as “Malala Day” to commemorate the young activist.
