Kamal asks the Sindh provincial government to ease the plight of fishermen

Syed Mustafa Kamal, the chairman of the Pak Sarzameen Party, asked the Sindh government to withdraw the power assigned to the Maritime Safety Administration in order to alleviate the plight of 2 million families related to the fishing industry.

“The Sindh Provincial Government has handed over the procedures for identifying fishermen, including inspection of fishing permits, fishing nets and life jackets, to the Maritime Safety Administration,” he said in a conversation with a fishermen delegation led by the vice chairman of the fishermen’s association. On Thursday, Haji Ali Kachi was at the party’s secretariat.

The delegation included fishermen leaders from different coastal areas, including Bababat Island, Salihabad and Manola. “On the one hand, it is affecting the reputation of the Maritime Safety Administration, and on the other hand, it has created a rift between millions of poor fishing families and security agencies,” Kamal said.

He said that because of the “worst management” of PPP, the multi-million dollar foreign exchange fishing industry has suffered irreparable damage. “Despite the ban on fishing in June and July, the trawlers of influential people in Sindh are still fishing on a large scale in the sea,” Kamal said. “The boats and nets of 2 million poor fishermen were confiscated. As the Sindh government failed to negotiate with stakeholders and formulate strategies in this regard, there is a danger of rifts between millions of fishermen and maritime security.”

Kamal said that a consensus-based strategy must be developed. He said that PSP will not leave millions of fishermen alone, but will become the voice of oppressed fishermen in every forum.

The problem of fishermen is not only an issue of employment and economy for millions of people, but also an issue of national security. All legitimate demands of fishermen must be recognized and resolved urgently.

He said that after the implementation of the fishing ban from June to July, the Sindh provincial government should provide fishermen with a two-month allowance to save millions of families from hunger and poverty. Central Vice Chairman Hafeez-ud-Din, members of the National Assembly and District Chairman Keamari Usman Humayun Rajput also attended the meeting.
