JUI-F in the lead with 23 seats in re-polling

The opposition Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) appears to be in the lead with the ruling Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) falling in the second place and other political parties as well as independent candidates trailing further behind in the re-polling for the first phase of local government elections held in the remaining 66 tehsils of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, according to unofficial and unverified results on Monday.

The JUI-F released the details of its successful candidates in 23 tehsils of the province including city mayors of Peshawar, Kohat and Bannu, while the PTI claimed victory in 21 out of 66 tehsils. The PTI delivered a major blow to the JUI-F by clinching the mayor’s seat of Dera Ismail Khan, the hometown of the party’s chief.

Further, Awami National Party bagged seven seats, Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz three, Jamaat-e-Islami and Tehreek-e-Islah Pakistan two each and Pakistan Peoples Party.

Barrister Muhammad Ali Saif, the special assistant to the chief minister on information, told the media that according to preliminary results, “we have 21 seats and the highest number of votes”. “Many independent members are in contact with us,” he added.

“The victory of Dera is a great victory. DI Khan is the home district of Maulana Fazlur Rehman and (PPP’s) Faisal Karim Kundi’s district but PTI was successful.”

He said that the PTI campaigned in a political and organised manner and “we will win from Karak, Bannu and Bajaur”.

“We will wait for the final results from the Election Commission.”

According to provisional consolidated results issued by the respective returning officers, ruling PTI’s Umar Amin Gandapur clinched the mayor’s seat of Dera Ismail Khan with 63,753 votes while Muhammad Kafeel Khan of the JUI-F stood runner-up with 38,891 votes and PPP’s Faisal Karim Kundi with 32,788 votes came in third. The turnout of voters remained 45.57 per cent. Similarly, PTI’s Azmat Ali Khan won the Karak tehsil chairman’s seat with 20,947 votes, defeating Awami National Party’s Abdur Rehman Khan who got 16,576 votes and JUIF’s Jan-e-Alam, who got 10,141 votes.

Lakki Marwat tehsil mayor’s seat was secured by an independent candidate, Shafqatullah Khan, who received 22,618 votes, defeating another independent candidate, Zafarullah Khan, who got 20,519 votes and JUI-F’s Abdur Rahim stood third position with 17,540 votes. The voters’ turnout remained 49.03 per cent.

Shah Khalid, candidate of Tehreek-e-Islahat Pakistan, won the Landi Kotal chairman’s seat in Khyber with 10,231 votes while independent candidate, Said Alam, with 4,707 votes came in second. The turnout of voters remained 22.25 per cent.

Likewise, ANP’s Gulzar Hussain with 7,820 votes has been elected Khudukhel tehsil chairman in Buner district while PTI’s candidate, Muhammad Afsar, with 7,658 votes came in second. The turnout of voters was recorded as 51.12 per cent.

A tough electoral battle was witnessed between Syed Badshah of the JUI-F and Jamaat-e-Islami’s Haroon Rashid for Khar Bajaur tehsil chairman’s seat. Badshah with 18,775 votes defeated Rashid, who got 18,244 votes. The voters’ turnout remained 30.28 per cent.

Pishtekhara tehsil chairman’s seat in Peshawar was won by JUI-F candidate, Muhammad Haroon, who got 11,321 votes, defeating PML-N’s Tahir Khan with 10162 votes in the constituency where voters’ turnout remained 32 per cent.

According to details released by the JUI-F, Zubair Ali won the Peshawar mayor’s seat, Faridullah Khan won in Mathra tehsil, Mufti Tala Mohammad in Badhaber tehsil, Kaleemullah in Shah Alam tehsil, Maulana Abdul Rauf in Shakir tehsil in Charsadda, Hamza Asif in Shabqadar tehsil, Maulana Hammadullah in Katlang tehsil, Maulana Mubarak Ahmad in Rustam tehsil, Hafiz Muhammad Saeed in Takht Bhai tehsil, Irfan Durrani won the Bannu City mayor’s seat, Mamoor Khan in Bakakhel, Malik Masto Khan in Marian tehsil, Maulana Sherzaman bagged the Kohat City mayor’s seat, Saddam Hussain in Tank tehsil, Haji Bahadur Khan in Jandola, Haji Muhammad Rahim Jadoon in Topi tehsil of Swabi, Maulana Muhammad Imran in Tal tehsil, Maulana Bismillah Jan in Khoizi tehsil, Haji Taj Wali in Mohmand tehsil, Maulana Kafil in Bara tehsil of Khyber, Haji Syed Badshah in Khar tehsil, Anwar Bacha in Betni tehsil.
