The veterans of the Israeli Labor Party promised to bridge the deep divisions in society when they were sworn in.

When Isaac Herzog was sworn in as the 11th president of Israel, he promised to heal deep divisions in Israeli society.

Herzog, 60, held the Torah in one hand in front of the Knesset on Wednesday, assuming the main ceremonial position aimed at serving as the country’s moral compass.

Herzog promised to be “everyone’s president” and added that the “central expectation” of all Israelis is “to me, to all of us, to lower the tone, lower the flame, and calm things down.”

“My mission, the mission of my tenure, is to make every effort to rebuild hope,” he said in his inauguration speech.

The assembly hall was decorated with large bouquets of white lilies for the inauguration ceremony. The military rabbi blew the horn of the ram, followed by a performance by the children’s choir. Those at the assembly sang the national anthem of Israel.

In applause, Herzog and the outgoing President Ruben Rivlin left the podium together.

“Actually, I am a little envious of you,” Rivlin said in a letter to Herzog earlier on Twitter.

He called it a “great and wonderful privilege” to be the chairman of all communities in Israel-Jews and Arabs, religious and secular, young and old.

Herzog’s father Chaim served as Israeli president in the 1980s, and his term of office is seven years. Chaim Herzog also serves as Israel’s ambassador to the United Nations.

The grandfather of the new president, Yitzhak HaLevi Herzog, was the country’s first chief rabbi. His uncle, Abba Eban, serves as Minister of Foreign Affairs and Ambassador to the United Nations and the United States.

Herzog was elected president by the Knesset last month. He previously served as the leader of the Labour Party and the leader of the opposition party in parliament.

After leaving politics in 2018, he served as the head of the Jewish Agency, a non-profit organization that works closely with the Israeli government to promote Jewish immigration to Israel and provide services to Jewish communities overseas.

‘President of all’

Holding an office in a profound department of Israeli society, Hegger remembered his election, he intends to become “everyone’s president” and strives to preserve Israel’s democracy.

Although most of the function of the office is to receive foreign dignitaries and other ceremonial roles, the president has the right to pardon.

If former prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who is on trial for corruption charges, is found guilty, this could become part of the national agenda.

The president is also responsible for selecting party leaders to form a ruling coalition and serve as prime minister after parliamentary elections-Rivlin completed this task five times during his tenure, most recently after the parliamentary elections on March 23.

Herzog’s inauguration came less than a month after Israel’s new government under the leadership of Prime Minister Naftali Bennett was sworn in. The latter and Foreign Minister Yail Rapide ( Yair Lapid) reached an alliance agreement.

Netanyahu was removed from office after serving as the longest prime minister in Israel’s history for 12 years and is now the leader of the opposition.
