ICC unveils nominees for Emerging Cricketer of the Year Awards

The International Cricket Council (ICC) on Wednesday, unveiled the nominees for the Emerging Cricketer of the Year 2023 Awards for both and Men and Women’s categories.

New Zealand’s Rachin Ravindra, South Africa’s Gerald Coetzee, Sri Lanka’s Dilshan Madushanka and India’s Yashasvi Jaiswal were nominated for the Men’s Emerging Cricketer of the Year 2023 award.

Young left-handed opener Ravindra’s career took a giant stride in the ICC Men’s ODI World Cup 2023 where he accumulated 578 runs, only behind Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma and Quinton de Kock.

His tally was also the highest by a New Zealand batter in a World Cup.

Rachin Ravindra had a stellar year in white ball cricket. He scored 820 runs in ODIs and also took 18 wickets at 46.61.

Right-arm pacer Gerald Coetzee emerged as an all-format pacer for South Africa in 2023.

Coetzee picked up 10 wickets at 21.70 in Tests, 31 wickets at 23.22 in ODIs and six wickets at 23.33 in T20Is.

He finished as the fourth-highest wicket-taker of the ICC World Cup 2023, making 20 scalps in eight matches and leading South Africa’s pace attack from the front.

Another pacer who came to the limelight during the World Cup was Sri Lanka’s Dilshan Madushanka.

The left-arm pacer came in as an injury replacement for Dushmantha Chameera during the Qualifiers for the Cricket World Cup and cashed in the opportunity.

He emerged as a stand-out bowler for Sri Lanka in the mega event where he picked up 21 wickets in nine matches.

In 2023 as a whole, Madushanka claimed 31 wickets at 24.06 in ODIs and six wickets at 33 in T20Is.

22-year-old Indian opener Yashasvi Jaiswal made heads turned with his consistent performances in Tests and T20I cricket.

The left-handed opener scored 288 runs at 57.60 in Tests and 430 runs at 33.07 in T20Is which earned him a spot in the nominees for the Emerging Men’s Cricketer of the Year award.

On the other hand, two breakout pacers from Bangladesh and England, Marufa Akter, Lauren Bell respectively, Australia’s opening batter Phoebe Litchfield and enterprising Scottish all-rounder Darcey Carter were nominated for the coveted ICC Women’s Emerging Cricketer of the Year 2023 award.
