Hindu temple attack: CJP Gulzar orders police to arrest all criminals

Chief Justice Gurzal Ahmed condemned the Punjab police chief for failing to take action to protect Hindu temples from the Rahim Yar Khan mob and directed him to arrest all criminals involved in the incident.

Chief Justice Gulzal noticed the attack on the temple in Bhong village after meeting with Ramesh Kumar, MNA and the general patron of the Hindu Council of Pakistan.

More than a dozen men armed with clubs destroyed the Hindu temple in Rahim Yar Khan, chanted slogans and desecrated idols in places of worship. Video clips of the incident went viral on social media and aroused sharp criticism from Pakistani rights activists.

Justice Gurza expressed concern about this tragic incident and summoned the Chief Secretary of Punjab and IGP Punjab to appear in the Supreme Court and submit a report on the incident.

At today’s hearing, CJP expressed dissatisfaction with the incident and condemned officials, saying that the attack severely damaged Pakistan’s global reputation.

He said that when the mob destroyed the temple, the police acted as a silent bystander. “What are the police and the government doing?” CJP asked.

In response, IGP Inam Ghani said that the assistant commissioner and ASP were both on the scene, and the government’s first task was to provide security for 70 Hindu families near the temple.

“FIR has added a terrorism clause,” he said.

“If the deputy commissioner and DPO cannot perform their duties, they should be fired,” CJP Gulzar emphasized.

IG Inam Ghani informed the court that no one has been arrested in connection with the case so far, when Judge Qazi Amin asked what action the police had taken.

Another Attorney General Sukhail Mahmoud said that Prime Minister Imran Khan had taken note of the matter.

In this regard, CJP Gulzar said that the court will focus on the legal perspective of the case.

“Three days have passed, but no one has been arrested,” the Chief Justice said disappointedly.

Judge Amin stated that the police failed to perform their duties.

“If there were professional police officers in this force, this problem would have been resolved long ago,” the Supreme Judge commented, adding that people should think about the impact of this incident on Pakistani Hindus.

“Think about how Muslims will react if the mosque is attacked,” he said.

He also asked about an 8-year-old Hindu boy who was arrested by the police. The police chief of Punjab told the judge that the boy was first brought before the magistrate.

“What do you expect from an 8-year-old child? How much does an 8-year-old child know about religion? Does the police know what a child thinks?”

In response, Justice Gurza ordered the removal of SHO who arrested him.

The Supreme Court ordered action against criminals and ordered officials to submit reports for the next hearing scheduled for August 13.

The SC also ordered the establishment of a peace committee to ensure religious harmony among followers of different faiths.
