KYC fraud has increased significantly in India, and telecom operators such as Airtel India and Vi are sparing no effort to remind users to pay attention to these false news links about KYC. They also advise users not to download remote access applications such as TeamViewer QuickSupport and AnyDesk.

Finally, the cybercrime department of the Delhi Police revealed that the Google Play store search results are mainly responsible for helping scammers conduct KYC fraud in India.

In a tweet, DCP Cybercrime added that searching for KYC in the Google Play store will show TeamViewer Quick Support as the first result, which is the same app used for KYC fraud in India.

“Dear Google India, online fraud in the name of KYC verification is rampant. Fraudsters use remote access apps to steal card details, online banking details, and OTP. Use the keyword “KYC” to search in the Google Play store Show Team Viewer Quick Support as the first option. Such suggestions and tips from the Play Store can help fraudsters deceive vulnerable users. This may be one of the reasons why people are tricked into installing such apps in the name of KYC updates 1. Please solve this problem in the public interest,” DCP Cybercrime tweeted from its official Twitter handle and attached a video showing the problem.

The KYC scam involves a threat that requires people to submit within 24 hours of calling eKYC for verification to avoid service interruption. The crook pretends to be from the customer service team, and then asks the user to install a quick support app from the Google Play store. This is the source of the trap. When the user goes to download the application, he sees that there is no such application, and he is directed to the Team Viewer to quickly support the application. Then, the scammer can easily take over the smartphone, no matter what activity the user performs, the scammer will take a screenshot of that activity.

As the Teamviewer application is being abused more and more, developers have added faces and fingerprints to smartphones to prevent unauthorized access.
