Germany to provide another €1m of relief supplies for flood victims

Germany announced on Friday that it would provide another €1 million as an aid to flood victims in Pakistan for urgently needed food, hygiene products and medical supplies.

According to a tweet shared by the German Ambassador to Pakistan Alfred Grannas, Federal Foreign Office announced that it would provide additional aid to bring relief to the lives of flood victims.

Germany is topping up its funding to the German Red Cross (Deutsches Rotes Kreuz) for helping the flood victims in Pakistan.

The tweet added that the floods in Pakistan show the climate crisis, which is threatening lives.

Germany had pledged its support of €17 million for Pakistan in this challenging time. After adding €1 million, the European country’s contribution to flood aid is more than €18 million.

Record monsoon rains and melting glaciers in Pakistan's northern mountains have brought floods that have affected over 33 million people and killed nearly 1,400, including children. The inundation, blamed on climate change, is still spreading.

Villagers near Manchhar lake fled their homes on Thursday due to rising flood waters. The disaster has been estimated to have caused losses of about $10 billion, disrupting the lives of millions.

In Sindh, one of the worst-hit regions, people worked to strengthen an existing dyke as floodwaters threatened the town of Bhan Syedabad.

National disaster authorities said the death toll reached nearly 1,400.

In July and August, Pakistan got 391mm of rain, or nearly 190% more than the 30-year average, while Sindh got 466% more than the average.

The World Health Organisation has said more than 6.4 million people need humanitarian support in the flooded areas.
