Lahore: The federal and provincial governments have launched four development projects worth more than Rs 1.8 billion for the development of Lahore Government College University (GCU).

Among the highest development funding allocations in GCU’s history, a budget of 410 million rupees was allocated only in the 2021-22 fiscal year.

The Federal Ministry of Planning and Development approved 1.158 billion rupees for the second phase of the new GCU campus. The other three projects are reflected in Punjab’s 2021-22 Annual Development Plan (ADP). The total cost of the girls’ dormitory, swimming pool and Sufi center is 440 million rupees, 1.43278 billion rupees and 100 million rupees respectively.

The most prominent project is the establishment of Sheikh Abul Hasan Ash-Shadhili Sufism Science and Technology Research Center. The construction of the female dormitory on the main campus will also meet the needs of GCU girls. The construction of the swimming pool will provide a good opportunity for GCU to hold swimming competitions of international standards.

The second phase of the new Kala Shah Kaku campus will be enriched with academic and extracurricular activities.

The second phase includes the construction of academic buildings, dormitories, staff dormitories and external development projects for 1,200 students.

GCU Vice President Professor Asghar Zaidi said that GCU is Pakistan’s most prestigious and oldest higher education institution, but it has long been ignored by successive governments in terms of student facilities and expansion. He said that a campus with only a few thousand students now has more than 14,000 students studying more than 30 subjects.

He said that female students from all over Pakistan came to GCU to study, but unfortunately, it has only one female dormitory with a capacity of less than 200 students. Hundreds of students have to live in private female dormitories far away from the campus. .

The principal said that the new four-story female dormitory will be built in the university’s science building, which can accommodate more than 300 students.

Professor Zaidi said: “GCU is the winner of the intercollegiate and intercollegiate swimming championships, which surprised everyone, but our students do not have swimming pool facilities,” he added, “we must ask other universities to provide them for Training the pools of our team, we obtained these pools in a short period of time according to their terms and conditions.”

Speaking of the Sufism Center, Professor Zaidi said that the center is an initiative of Pakistan’s First Lady Bushra Imran, and it will focus on Islamic philosophy, Sufism, spirituality, comparative religious studies, and mystical traditions. Conduct research, and also provide a platform for interfaith dialogue at the national and international levels.
