Islamabad: Information Minister Fawad Chowdhury revealed on Friday the reasons for Prime Minister Imran Khan’s absence from the National Security Briefing for Congress’s military leaders.
When talking to Gio Pakistan earlier today, the Minister of Information said, “The Prime Minister was originally scheduled to attend the National Security Conference, but the opposition leader Shebaz Sharif has told the NA Speaker that if the Prime Minister comes to attend the briefing, he will not attend.”
The day before, the closed-door meeting of the National Security Committee of the Parliament was held in the National Assembly and lasted more than 8 hours.
Lieutenant General Faiz Hameed, Director-General of Inter-Service Intelligence (ISI), briefed the parliamentarians for more than two hours, focusing on the security situation in Afghanistan and the region.
The meeting was co-chaired by Sadiq Sanjrani, President of the Senate, and Asad Qaiser, Speaker of the National Assembly. 29 members of the National Security Committee of the Parliament and 16 other members of Parliament, including federal ministers and parliament leaders, attended the meeting.
Army Chief of Staff General Kamal Javed Bajwa, National Security Adviser Dr. Moyd Youssef and four chief ministers also attended the meeting.
Fawad responded to the talking points the day before, saying that the government hopes and prays for the peaceful transfer of power in Afghanistan.
“We are pushing for negotiations in Afghanistan,” he said.
“Pakistan has 3 million Afghan nationals-if we add another 3 million, it will put a lot of pressure on our economy,” he said.
“The Taliban will not take over the government so easily,” Chowdhury said of the prospects for peace in this war-torn neighboring country. “We hope that the Afghan Taliban and the Ghani government will negotiate [a way out].”
“We only worry about India using Afghan territory against us,” he added. “[AtthesametimewewillcontinuetotrytomediatebetweentheAfghanTalibanandtheGhanigovernment”[MeanwhilewewillcontinuetotryandmediatebetweentheAfghanTalibanandtheGhanigovernment”[与此同时,我们将继续尝试在阿富汗塔利班和加尼政府之间进行调解。”[MeanwhilewewillcontinuetotryandmediatebetweentheAfghanTalibanandtheGhanigovernment”
