Brussels: EU Foreign and Security Policy Spokesperson Nabila Masrali said on Tuesday that the EU is concerned about the continuing violence, intimidation, kidnapping and killing of journalists in Pakistan.

Maslali said in a statement that there have been “obvious negative trends” in media freedom in recent years.

The spokesperson said: “Regression in this area has adversely affected Pakistan’s overall atmosphere of freedom of speech, and has a negative impact on Pakistan’s foreign image.”

Masrali said that the EU is also concerned about widespread and systematic harassment of women journalists online through coordinated campaigns that include abusive language and threats of violence.

The spokesperson said that the European Union actively promotes the importance of freedom of speech and the need to protect journalists from all over the world, including in Pakistan, and is in direct contact with the Pakistani authorities.

“In the fifth EU-Pakistan Strategic Dialogue with Foreign Minister Qureshi on November 3, 2020, [High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy] Joseph Borrell reiterated his concerns about freedom of speech and media freedom in Pakistan,” Masrali said.

The spokesperson said that EEAS and the Pakistani government have regular dialogues on human rights issues, among which freedom of speech and the media are important topics on the agenda.

Masrali said that we hope that Pakistan will reach an agreement on the date of this year’s meeting as soon as possible.

“The EU maintains close contact with journalists and media professionals in the country, and supports local NGOs in advocacy and capacity building in their work to support freedom of speech and access to information,” she added.
