Beijing: Chinese state media said on Wednesday that the death toll from the partial collapse of a budget hotel in the eastern Chinese city of Suzhou on Monday had risen to 17 people.

According to official media reports, of the 23 people trapped in the ruins of the Four Seasons New Century Hotel in Suzhou, only 6 survived.

More than 650 people participated in the search and rescue operation, which ended on Wednesday morning.

The Jiangsu Provincial Government has set up a task force to conduct in-depth investigations into the specific causes of the collapse.

According to the online booking website, Four Seasons Kaiyuan opened in 2018 with a total of 54 rooms. The collapsed part of the hotel is three stories high.

According to some official media reports, the collapse was preliminarily determined to be due to the owner’s changes to the hotel structure.

According to the Beijing Youth Daily, a hotel guest who checked out just before the collapse on Monday spoke of loud drilling and shoveling noise.

The guest said that the building was shaking.

Since then, cities in Jiangsu have held emergency meetings on the safety of existing building structures, requesting strengthened inspection and supervision.
