Islamabad: On Wednesday, Prime Minister Imran Khan praised the National Command and Operations Center (NCOC), the National Bank of Pakistan (SBP), and the Ehsaas team for their effective and coordinated response during the COVID-19 pandemic. In its Global Normality Index, The Economist magazine ranked Pakistan as the third among 50 countries that have performed well in controlling the spread of COVID-19.

The report shows that Pakistan’s neighbors India and China ranked 48th and 19th with 46.5 and 72.9 points respectively. The United States ranks 20th in the rankings.

The Economist’s “Normality Index” focuses on how these countries can better return to pre-pandemic levels, scoring each country by using eight indicators: time away from home, retail, office use, public transportation, Road traffic, flights, movies and sports attendance.

According to the report, due to blockades imposed by many countries, global normalcy increased during March 2020.

With 100 as the pre-pandemic activity level, Pakistan ranks third with 84.4 of 100. Hong Kong topped the list with 96.3, while New Zealand ranked second with 87.8.

Pakistan ranks over 100 in the categories of “office use”, “retail”, “public transportation” and “time away from home”. However, the “cinema” and “flight” categories scored lower.
