Tashkent: On Friday, Prime Minister Imran Khan asked Afghanistan to treat Pakistan as a “partner for peace” instead of blaming it for the continued unrest. He said this was “the result of the US using a military solution instead of a political solution.”

“It is extremely unfair to blame Pakistan for what is happening in Afghanistan… Peace in Afghanistan is our top priority,” the Prime Minister said in response to Afghan President Ashraf Ghani in “Regional Connectivity of Central and South Asia, at the Conference Center Challenges and Opportunities to be Held”.

In his speech, the President of Afghanistan made baseless accusations against Pakistan, claiming that 10,000 fighters had entered Afghanistan from the country.

“If the negotiations fail, we will fight the Taliban,” Ghani said. “This is the last chance for peace.”

The Prime Minister refuted President Ghani’s statement that Pakistan “does not support peace” and categorically stated that Pakistan does not want turmoil in its neighboring countries because peace is in its own interests.

“Mr. Ghani, I want to show you that Pakistan will be the last country to consider supporting the turmoil and unrest in Afghanistan,” he said.

“Why should the Taliban listen to Pakistan?”

The Prime Minister stated that Pakistan will continue to support Afghanistan’s reconciliation and urged Afghan stakeholders and the international community to intensify their efforts to “resolve through political negotiations.”

He mentioned that because of the decades-long conflict in Afghanistan, Pakistan faces huge economic instability and 70,000 casualties.

As Pakistan’s economy is recovering after going through a difficult phase, he said that the country wants peace in its neighboring countries to ensure the completion of development projects to improve the entire region.

The Prime Minister of Pakistan stated that Pakistan has made every effort for peace in Afghanistan, including bringing the Taliban to the dialogue table. However, he said that the right time to negotiate with the Taliban is before the U.S. forces withdraw from Afghanistan.

He pointed out, “Why should the Taliban listen to Pakistan when they succeed after withdrawal,” he pointed out, adding that the United States has always insisted on resolving the conflict in Afghanistan by military means.

He said that Pakistan has taken in more than 3 million Afghan refugees and is unable to withstand the refugee wave after further turmoil.

During a meeting with Uzbekistan’s President Shavkat Mirziyoev yesterday, the Prime Minister stated that he discussed how the neighboring countries of Central Asia can support peace and stability in Afghanistan in order to promote the prosperity of the region.

Khan said that another challenge facing regional development is the “unresolved disputes” in South Asia, including the core issues in Jammu and Kashmir.

He said: “The outstanding dispute between Pakistan and India is still a challenge, and Kashmir is the main issue,” he added, unfortunately, because of this situation, the huge potential for regional development has not yet been tapped.

The prime minister stated that Pakistan believes in promoting economic activity by promoting land and sea links between countries to achieve regional connectivity.

He said that Gwadar Seaport in Pakistan has the potential to meet the needs of Central and South Asia as a regional transportation hub.

He said that the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) will be a harbinger of the development and prosperity of the region, benefiting both regions.

The meeting gathered Uzbek President Shavkatmir Ziyoyev, Afghan President Ashraf Ghani, foreign ministers and senior representatives of Central and South Asian countries, as well as heads of international and regional organizations and global financial institutions.

The main purpose of the forum is to strengthen the historically close friendly relations, trust and good-neighborly relations between Central and South Asian countries in order to safeguard the interests of the two peoples and regional countries.

During the plenary and breakout sessions, forum participants discussed the possibility of promoting measures aimed at the development of trade, economy, transportation, communications, and cultural and humanitarian cooperation in the context of further deepening regional connectivity.
