London: After seven members of the England team tested positive for COVID-19, Ben Stokes was appointed captain of the New England team to participate in the ODI series against Pakistan.

According to a statement from the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB), “Ben Stokes will return to the team as captain, and Chris Silver, who was supposed to take a break in the white ball series Wood will be the head coach.”

The announcement was made after news that three members of the initial match team and four members of the management team tested positive for COVID-19, so the entire team initially selected was required to be isolated.

After announcing the new team members, the England team now has nine uncapped players.

Ben Stokes led the England team for the first time. After a finger injury in the Indian Premier League, Stokes has been regaining full health by playing for County Durham, and now he will play in England for the first time since March.

The new squad players and support staff will now undergo PCR testing and bridging agreements to ensure their safe entry into the English camp.

Seven members tested positive

A PCR test conducted in Bristol on Monday showed that three unnamed players and four support staff tested positive. The rest are considered close contacts and must also be self-isolated.

But the European Central Bank insisted that the three-match series against Pakistan scheduled to begin in Cardiff on Thursday will continue.

After Thursday’s game in Cardiff, the ODI series will continue at Lord’s Stadium on Saturday, before ending the week at Edgbaston in Birmingham on Tuesday.

England and Pakistan will play against three Twenty20 international players on July 16, 18 and 20. The matches will be held at Trent Bridge, Headingley and Old Trafford respectively.
