Karachi: Pakistan approached its maiden weightlifting medal at the Tokyo Olympics on Sunday, but it dropped slightly due to Talha Talib’s fifth place in the competition.

Talha, who participated in the men’s 67 kg weightlifting competition, once took the lead in the competition, and was finally surpassed by athletes from China, Colombia and Italy.

The 21-year-old weightlifter-from Pakistan for the first time in 44 years-participated in the competition without a coach, but he showed his courage.

After lifting 150 kg in the snatch, Talha fell when attempting 166 kg in the first clean and jerk attempt. He lifted 170 kg in his last attempt to lift a total weight of 320 kg.

Talha was still the leader of the board until Han Mayekon of South Korea lifted a 174kg clean and jerk to push Talha to second place. Colombia’s Louis Javier lifted 180 kilograms, and Italy’s Zalmimirko lifted 177 kilograms of clean and jerk, pushing Talja farther.

However, the gold medal was Chinese player Chen Lijun, who lifted 187 kg in the clean and jerk-this is a new Olympic record-and lifted a total of 332 kg in the finish.

Talha, a gold medalist at the Commonwealth Games, finished fifth in the competition. Although he failed to win a medal, his outstanding performance has been praised all over the country.

In an interview before the Olympics, Talha emphasized that the Pakistan Sports Board (PSB) had not organized any training camps for weightlifters in the past three years.

As PSB did not arrange adequate facilities, Talha himself had to train in a temporary gym in the courtyard of a school in Gujranwala.
