  • Pakistan is worried that if Afghanistan enters a civil war, Pakistan’s Pashtuns may be involved in the conflict.
  • The Prime Minister said that as far as Pakistan is concerned, it has already done what it can in Afghanistan.

Prime Minister Imran Khan asked for evidence on Wednesday that the Taliban shelter in Afghanistan is located in Pakistan.

In the interview PBS News Hour, The host Judy Woodruff asked Prime Minister Imran about the Taliban shelter in Pakistan and a report on the organization of 10,000 fighters crossing the border to help Afghanistan.

“Judy, first of all, these 10,000 Taliban, or as the Afghan government said, jihadists crossed, absolutely nonsense. Why didn’t they give us proof?” Prime Minister Imran asked.

Regarding the issue of safe havens, Imran always ideally knows where these refuges are located in Pakistan.

The Prime Minister explained that Pakistan has hosted 3 million Pashtun refugees, who belong to the same ethnic group as the Taliban. He added that there are camps of 500,000 and 100,000 people or more.

“The Taliban are not military equipment. They are ordinary civilians. If there are civilians in these camps, how should Pakistan hunt these people? How can you call them refuges?” Prime Minister Imran asked.

The host threw the question to Washington and other organizations claiming that Pakistan helped the Afghan Taliban follow-up.

The Prime Minister told the host that these allegations were unfair and told her the history of the conflict. He explained that Pakistan has nothing to do with the terrorist attack in New York on September 11, 2001.

The prime minister said that al Qaeda is headquartered in Afghanistan and no Pakistanis participated in the attack.

“Pakistan has no radical Taliban, and no Pakistanis are involved,” Prime Minister Imran said. He added that when Pakistan decided to join the U.S. war on terrorism, the country was hit hard, losing 70,000 citizens and economic losses of 150 billion U.S. dollars.

“The U.S. really messed up in Afghanistan”

When Woodruff asked the Prime Minister his assessment of the situation in Afghanistan, he said that Washington really messed up the situation in Afghanistan.

“First, they tried to find a military solution in Afghanistan, but they never did. People who know the history of Afghanistan like me and keep saying that there is no military solution are called anti-American. I am called Taliban Khan,” Prime Minister Imran said .

Prime Minister Imran also stated that although the United States has lived in Afghanistan for 20 years, he does not know what the United States’ goals in Afghanistan are.

“I don’t know what the goal of Afghanistan is, whether there are some country building, democracy or liberation of women. Whatever the reason, their approach will never be a solution,” Prime Minister Imran said.

He also expressed regret about the way the United States handled this solution. The Prime Minister explained that when NATO forces decided that there was no military solution, their bargaining power disappeared.

“Unfortunately, when they finally decided that there was no military solution, the bargaining power of the United States or NATO forces had disappeared,” Prime Minister Imran said. He added that when 150,000 NATO troops are in Afghanistan, the United States should seek a political solution.

“Once they reduced their troops to only 10,000, when they gave their withdrawal date, the Taliban thought they had won,” Prime Minister Imran said. He added that it is now difficult to ask the organization to compromise or “force them” to adopt a political solution.

“It is difficult to force them to adopt a political solution because they [Taliban] Think they won,” Prime Minister Imran said.

Pakistan’s good and bad results against Afghanistan

The host also asked the Prime Minister about the good and bad results of Pakistan in the conflict in Afghanistan.

Prime Minister Imran told the host that if an inclusive government of all factions including the Taliban is formed in Afghanistan, good results for Islamabad will be. He added that the worst situation in Pakistan would be the “prolonged civil war” in Afghanistan.

In this case, the Prime Minister stated that Islamabad will face two problems. Firstly, the refugee problem. Secondly, the country is worried that Pashtuns in Pakistan will be involved in the conflict.

“Our concern is that a protracted civil war will bring more refugees, and you know that our economic situation does not allow us to influx again,” the prime minister said.

“Secondly, people are worried that the civil war will flow into Pakistan because the Taliban are Pashtuns. Now there are more Pashtuns on our border than in Afghanistan. So the worry is that if this situation continues, our generals will Shitu people will be involved, which is what we least want,” Prime Minister Imran said.

U.S. base will make Pakistan a target: PM

The prime minister also shared that the US military presence in Pakistan will make the country a target.

He told Woodruff that when Pakistan joined the war on terror, it lost 70,000 people and was on the verge of bankruptcy.

The Prime Minister said: “We are not capable of fighting more within our borders, nor are we capable of conducting any terrorist activities within our country.” He reminded that at the height of the war on terrorism, suicides occurred throughout the country. The explosions, businesses and tourism collapsed.

“If there is a conflict in Afghanistan and there is a base in Pakistan, we will be the target, and then we will be part of the conflict,” Prime Minister Imran said.

The Prime Minister said that Pakistan hopes to cooperate peacefully with the United States, not in conflict. He added that the final relationship between Islamabad and Washington was transactional.

“Pakistan is more like a hired gun. The United States says we have provided you with assistance, and that is why you are fighting this so-called war on terror,” Prime Minister Imran said. He added that the aid provided by the United States is “insignificant” compared to the cost of Pakistan’s involvement in the conflict.

“Due to the failure of the US military, Afghanistan has fallen into this situation”

Prime Minister Imran told the host that if the Taliban take over Afghanistan, Pakistan will be powerless because the military solution has failed.

“What should we do? For more than two decades, the United States has tried to force a military solution in Afghanistan. The reason we are now in this position is because the military solution failed,” Prime Minister Imran said.

The Prime Minister reiterated that everyone’s best option is to have a political solution in Afghanistan in some way. He added that it is the best choice for the Taliban to sit down with the Ashraf Ghani government to form an inclusive government.

When asked if Pakistan is willing to accept the Taliban government in Afghanistan, the prime minister said: “Of course, we have no other choice but to push them as much as possible to seek a political solution.” However, he said that what Pakistan can do is Pray for the Afghan people to decide which government they wish to have,

“As far as Pakistan is concerned, we have done what we can,” Prime Minister Imran said.
