Officials said the suicide car bombing hit the convoy transporting the police chief of the Somali capital.

According to Somali officials, at least four people were killed and nine others were injured after a suicide car bomb attacked a convoy carrying the police chief of Mogadishu.

Police spokesman Sadiq Aden Ali said police chief Farhan Mohamud had survived Saturday’s bombing.

“We confirmed that four people, including pedestrians, were killed in the attack and nine others were injured. The intention of the Al-Shabaab militants was to kill the commander, but he survived,” Sadiq said.

Al Shabaab is an armed organization associated with al-Qaeda, which aims to overthrow the internationally recognized Somali government and claim responsibility for the attack.

The organization stated that they killed four police officers and wounded five others in the attack. They claimed that they were both bodyguards of the chief of police.

Al-Shabaab, which once controlled parts of Mogadishu, was driven out of the coastal capital in 2011 by Somali troops backed by African Union soldiers.

The organization still controls some rural areas in southern and central Somalia and has launched frequent attacks in Mogadishu.
