The number of dengue-infected patients in the federal capital has surged to 1,342, with 113 new cases being reported during the last 24 hours.

Islamabad District Health Officer (DHO) Dr Zaeem Zia said that around 219 patients have been admitted to different hospitals of Islamabad and Rawalpindi, 599 patients were brought to OPDs, 629 patients have been discharged after recovering, and the total death toll stands at five.

According to Zia, 396 cases of the virus were brought to Holy Family Hospital (HFH), 88 to Benazir Bhutto Hospital (BBH), 21 to Rawalpindi District Head Quarters (DHQ), 56 to Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS), 65 to Polyclinic Hospital (PCH), 175 to the Federal General Hospital (FGH), and 22 to the Capital Development Authority (CDA) hospital. The DHO said that over 450 infected residents of Islamabad visited private hospitals and laboratories in the twin cities. He added that 896 cases emerged from rural areas of the federal capital, while 447 surfaced from urban areas.

In neighbouring Rawalpindi, there are 165 dengue-infected patients, of whom 101 are positive. Over time, 1,191 citizens have been infected by the virus, but 1,110 of them made a full recovery.

The cantonment areas of the garrison city are among the hardest-hit. Therefore, Rawalpindi Cantonment Board (RCB) Executive Officer Omar Farooq said the anti-dengue drive has been expedited.

He stated that the surveillance operations are being sped up, and that a dengue ward has been established in Cantonment General Hospital (CGH) where all required facilities are available.
